THE ROBERT CLEGG FAMILY -
by Mrs. F. L. Graham (Fanny Clegg)
Robert Clegg, born at Willesley, Ont.and his son Morley
came to Russell in the spring of 1902. Robert Clegg and his son settled on the Attwood
place north of Russell. Theywere joined by
Mrs. Clegg and Norma Clegg in August of that year. The
Cleggs spent two years on the Attwood place where they raised horses and grain. Another
activity of Morley was the breaking of broncos which were brought in car loads from the
plains of Alberta for the use of the farmers of the district. Many are the stories of this
broncobusting and of horse races of their driving teams hitched to buggies
going to or coming from church, choir practice or Epworth League meetings.
Norma Clegg took a dressmaking and ladies tailoring course. Following
this, she went to Foxwarren. It was while there that she met George Falloon
to whom she was married Dec. 28, 1910. After the wedding they went with team and cutter to
their home half-way between Binscarth and St. Lazare. When the Cleggs left the Attwood
place, they lived for some time on the farm just south of Russell known later as the
Moynes place, then moved to the Bob Beattie farm eight miles north of Russell.
On June 19, 1907 Morley Clegg and Louise Beard were
married. They then caught the afternoon train to Russell where Angus Moynes
had their team and buggy waiting for them. They were followed by others of their friends
from the station and a lively horse-race followed. The following evening a receptiowas
held for them by Mr. and Mrs. Robt.Clegg and Norma at their home at Cherry
Hill - the Bob Beattie farm.
It was here in the big double house that their daughter Fanny was born.
Their union was blessed with four children, Fanny, Mrs. Allan Graham,
Binscarth; Roland of Arrow River, Man.; Jim deceased in
1936; and Olive who attended Russell High School in 1937-38 and died of
T.B. while serving with the R.C.N. in 1944.
In the spring of 1911 the Cleggs moved to the Binscarth district where Mr. and Mrs. Morley
Clegg still reside. Robert Clegg died in 1927 and Mrs. R. Clegg in 1931. Morley Clegg
served for many years as secretary-treasurer of Jellicoe S.D., as a member of the
Official Board of the Methodist Church and later the United Church and is a member of the
Masonic Lodge. They have both been active in church and community work all their lives.
