The Pettaway Family
The Pettaway home was famous for its hospitality. The first
house, built in 1888, had been replaced by a large cement structure, surrounded by lilacs
and flowers. Every winter a party was held and the house, large as it was, was
filled to capacity. The coal oil lamps lit up the long table laden with baking. The happy
guests, after a hearty supper, played games until midnight. Charades, Hiss, Consequences,
Post Office and Riddles were all popular and after a pause for lunch, the party went on
until the small hours of the morning, when the guests warmly clad in heavy clothing left
for their various homes to the sound of the jingling of the sleighbells in the frosty air.
