THE MOTT FAMILY -  by Miss Edith Mott

William Angelo Mott, the son of a doctor in Kent, England, arrived in Russell, Man. in 1887 to learn farming.

He spent some time with Mr. and Mrs.0.Simpson finding out the ways of the land from them before he took up a homestead north of Russell - Sec. 34-21-27.

There a small cottage was built over looking what was known as “Lawther’s Lake.” And there he took his bride, Winifred Butcher.

After several years of good crops and successful farming he decided to sell and travel to Winnipeg where he could ‘study Medicine. With him went his wife and three small daughters, Edith, Mary, and Beatrice.

Four years was the length of time then, of intensive study to obtain an M.D. degree. It was strenuous getting back to books and the demands made in the study of medicine.

In 1904 the coveted degree was obtained.

He loved the country and decided to practise in the town of Rathwell, Manitoba.

For thirty-five years he was doctor to this community. The people there looked on him with the affection and respect accorded the family physician.

In the spring when roads were impassable for horse and buggy or later on the car, he would strap his bag over his shoulder and ride to visit the sick.

He, himself became ill in 1938 and after a lengthy invalidism he died in 1939 in Winnipeg.
