THE EDWIN MEADOWS FAMILY by Mrs. E. V. Meadows (Harriet Temple) 1967

Edwin V. Meadows was born in London, England, November 1st, 1879. At the age of 12 years he came to Canada to live with his uncle, E. H. Meadows, who farmed in the Langenburg, Saskatchewan district. In 1894 he arrived in Russell and worked for J. P. Laycock, Who owned the old Central Hotel and livery stables. Ted, as he was called, drove the livery horses, tended bar at the hotel, and in the winter freighted foods, clothing, etc. to Hanbury's lumber camp, north-east of Russell. in 190l he took up a homestead in the Rochedale district, the N.W. quarter of 34-23-28, half a mile from the place now known as Dropmore Nursery, owned by D. Frank Skinner.  I, Harriet Temple, came to Russell with my parents in April 1904, at the age of ten. In 1906 my family moved to a homestead north of Rochedale. My father passed away in the fall of 1909. Ted and I were married in December l9ll. In the spring of 1912 we returned to work for J. P. Laycock, in the Endcliffe district. Four children were born in the next 10 years. Arthur, Edwin, Lily and Russell. In the fall of 1921 we moved to Russell to live. Ted eventually got work on the C.N. Railway as a section hand, later in the roundhouse. We had by this time two more girls, Amy and Marie. After a lengthy illness Ted passed away in September, 1942.

Arthur left home in 1935, and went to British Columbia in 1942. He joined the Army and was discharged in the spring of 1946. He now lives at Namu, B.C., is manager of the B.C. Packers Co.

Edwin was the next. He went to work in the mines in Red Lake and Val-D-Or Quebec, now is at San Antonio mine, Bissett, Manitoba.

    Lillian passed away in 1923.

Russell worked for Smellie Bros. after leaving school. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp in 1940, went overseas in 1942, returned in 1945. He passed away very suddenly in 1957 in Fort William, Ontario.

Amy joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, served at Cornwallis, Halifax and Newfoundland.  She is now married to Lionel McFarlane at Kipling, Saskatchewan.

Marie left school and worked in the Royal Bank at Russell. She is now Mrs. Paul Hutsel and lives at Waskada, Manitoba.

I am glad I saw so much progress made in the last 62 years. We had a good life and knew some of the hospitality and kindness of the old pioneer days Russell is a good place to live and many kind people live there.
