THE FAMILY OF J. T. LYON
(Florence Lyon)
Mr. and Mrs. Lyon were born, raised and married in Yorkshire, England, coming to Canada to
make their home. Mr. Lyon came first in 1889 to settle and make a home for his wife and
family of three children who followed the next year. The family lived in Winnipeg on Notre
Dame Avenue for six years during which time Tommy was born. Mr. Lyon was a skilled painter
and decorator and practiced this trade while in Winnipeg and later in Russell until he was
forced to retire due to blindness. After retirement he and his wife moved back to Winnipeg
in St. James where they lived the rest of their lives. Annie died at the age of 72 and Tom
Sr. at the age of 91. He was blind for 30 years.
There were five daughters and one son born into the Lyon family. The eldest daughter Annie
born October 3, 1882 married Gilbert Bishop and moved to Vancouver there being born to
them five sons and one daughter Their daughter was killed after falling from the Capilina
Canyon suspension bridge while in her early 20's. The five sons are all married with
families and live in Vancouver. Annie died in the 1920's.
Nellie was born March 12th, 1885 and married Charles Richardson, lawyer and barrister,
who practiced law in Winnipeg until his death in the late 1930's. They had eight children,
three of which died in infancy, Doris who died in her 30's and four now living in Winnipeg
and married with families
Florence, born March 7th, 1886, married Havelock Madill in l907 and farmed one mile north
of Russell for 28 years until Havelock's death in 1935 after which Florence moved into
Russell where she remained for several years. She then moved to Winnipeg and later her son
Frank joined her at Rivers. Frank moved to Owen Sound, Ontario in 1945 with his wife and
two children and Florence followed one year later. She also had another son Clarence who
is married with three children and living in Edmonton, Alberta.
Tommie was born November 1st, 1892 and married Iona Lonsbury and lived in Winnipeg for
several years and later moving to Flin Flon, Manitoba. They have one son Arthur who is
married with six children.
Minnie was born September 9th, 1896 and married Alvin Callin, a carpenter in Winnipeg and
later moved and lived the rest of her life in Flin Flon where they had two children, James
and Betty who are now married with families. Minnie died in her late 30's.
Emmie, born March 9th, 1898, married Oliver Loney in Winnipeg, where they lived for
several years, later moving to Glen Cairn, Manitoba, where they farmed until his death.
They had two children, Kenneth and Bert, who. are married and living in Winnipeg.
