GEORGE ARTHUR LAUMAN - (from the Brandon Sun )

MINNEDOSA (Staff) - March 9, 1966. George Arthur Lauman Q.C., of Shoal Lake was charged, tried and convicted in open court here recently by a jury of his peers, and given a life sentence.

But it won't be too difficult for the former Shoal Lake mayor to serve his time, because the sentence is that he take two hours, rest, relaxation or sleep each day in the easy chair presented him by fellow members of the bar and police forces from the Northern part of the Western Judicial District.

The charge of which he was convicted, after due deliberation, was that of being a good citizen. Presiding in the kangaroo court was Magistrate M. F. Manwaring of Winnipeg, who handed down sentence.

It was just the way of his many friends, both in and out of law organizations, to say good-bye and good luck to the man who has presided as police magistrate in the Minnedosa - Shoal Lake - Russell - Rossburn area for the past 29 years.

Mr. Lauman retires from the bench at the end of this month, but will continue to operate his law practice at Shoal Lake.

On hand Wednesday were representatives of the Manitoba Law Society and Bar Association, Provincial Government, Manitoba Magistrates Association, R.C.M.P. and Municipal police forces, municipal officials and friends

Hauled before the kangaroo court, Lauman was forced to listen to some of the kindest testimony he's heard since receiving the magistrate's appointment burgess, Q.C. of Minnedosa, told the more than 80 people gathered, "You're here because you feel there's a mark of respect owing to George (Lauman)."

Prior to receiving a standing ovation from the group assembled in his honor, Mr. Lauman told them, "I feel that you do me a great honor I want to thank all my friends for coming here."

He wishes success to Mr. Coward, and praised the R.C.M.P. and municipal police forces for the job they have done over the years.  "We citizens have a police force to be proud of," he said.  "The responsibility and obligation of the police is greater than it has ever been before."
