The Landon Family

Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Landon with their two little daughters, Asenath and Mabel, arrived in the Brightside area from England in October, 1888.   They came from Attercliffe (near Sheffield, England).  Albert Landon was in the dairy business in England but was attracted to Canada by hearing stories of free land and great opportunities in letters from their friends at Sykes at Endcliffe. Arriving at Russell they stayed with the Sykes for a while and then moved to the Dr. Barnardo Home until their own home was built.  They bought S.W.l/4 24-21-29 from Mr. Rea Sr. Mrs. Landon boarded men who were building the Barnardo Home until April 1899, when they moved into their own house at Brightside.  A third daughter, Madeline, was born in the new home. Albert Landon died three years later.  Some years after Mrs. Landon married Mr. Pettaway. His homestead was S.E. l/4 10-21-29.  They farmed actively for many years, later retiring to the town of Russell.

One of the early weddings to take place in Brightside was that of Mabel Landon to William Sudbury, of the Royston District. A wedding is always an event of interest to everyone in the district and this one was no exception. The bride in her lacy white dress; the bridesmaids, Asenath and Madeline, in dainty green and blue dresses; the flowers, the cake, the scrumptious array of food; all combined to make the happy occasion one long to be remembered by the family and its guests alike.
