THE JOHN KEATING FAMILY - by Earle Keating (1967)
Known as the "South Keatings"
John Keating and Lily Ann Mayberry were married at
Listowel, Ontario, and came to Manitoba in 1882. They settled on 21-20-27 in the Silver
Creek municipality. They had nine children, two girls and Seven boys, all born in Ontario.
Ben and Joseph died very young. Annie
married Alex Richardson. They had five children, Lillian, Ben, Lavina,
Mildred, and Nelson.
Jenny married Freeman Rice of Binscarth,
and had three children: Russell, Wilbur and Lottie. They lived on a farm
just south of Binscarth. Freeman and his son Wilbur were long time breeders of Clydesdale
horses.
Thomas married Lizzie Sherritt. They
lived on his father's farm. They had three children: Alice, who died in
infancy, Everett, and Stella. Everett lives in British Columbia. Stella
married John Allen in 1933. They farmed at Grandview until 1951, when
they moved to Kamloops, B.C. where they bought a store, with Post Office. Stella has
a son Everett, at home, and four daughters, all married, Joyce,
Rita, Marion, and Elaine.
John went west when he was a young man.
Oliver married Margaret Stewart.
After her death, he married Nellie Wells. They had four children: Bert,
Myrtle, Lexie, and Nelson. They moved to British Columbia early in the 1900's.
James married Jenny Buchanan. A more
detailed story of their family will be found in another part of this book. ( See James
Keating ) .
William married Agnes Laura Lang in
1896. They lived on 23-20-27, and had five children: Russell, Elizabeth, Arthur,
Margery and Wilfred. William E. died in 1936, and his wife in 1938.
Russell married Eva Westmacott of Winnipeg.
They had no family. Russell died in 1951, and Eva in
1960.
Elizabeth married William Boyd. They
lived in Saskatchewan. Elizabeth died in 1935.
Arthur, a bachelor, died in 1941.
Margery married Fred Peterson, and
lives in Winnipeg. They have a daughter, Joyce, also in Winnipeg. Fred
died in 1957.
Wilfred married Isobel McFadyen of
Shellmouth in 1937. He died in 1963. Their daughter, Winona, taught
school at Rochedale. She married Murry Robertson of Dropmore. They live
on the Wilfred Keating farm and have three children: Debbie, Brian and Cathleen.
Mrs. Wilfred Keating is a nurse at the Misericordia Hospital, Winnipeg.

John Andrew KEATING was born on 21 Apr 1860 in Listowel, Perth, Ontario, Canada. He died on 12 Jul 1933 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He married Margaret BUCHANAN on 19 Jan 1886 in Silver Creek RM, Manitoba, Canada.
Margaret BUCHANAN, daughter of John Buchanan and Isabel Watson, was born on 13 Feb 1867 in Elma, Perth, Ontario, Canada. She died on 11 Feb 1954 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They had the following children:

THE WILLIAM KEATING FAMILY - by Earle Keating
Known as the "North Keatings"
William and Mary Jane Keating and family came to
Manitoba in 1882. They left Ontario on March 16th and arrived in Winnipeg on March 31st.
Their train was snowbound in the States for several days. The conductor opened one of the
cars and got some groceries out to feed the people on the train. The men were given
shovels to clear away the snow. They loaded their settlers effects on wagons at Winnipeg
and started the trek west. Part of the family spent the summer with friends at Newdale and
Strathclair. The others came on to Silver Creek, where they established a home. There were
three girls Mary, Lillie, and Margaret; and six boys: James, John
O., Thomas, Robert, Sam, and Richard. They lived on 9-21-27.
- Mary married a Mr. McCauley they had no children.
- Lillie married George Little, of Neepawa, one-time M.L.A. They had no
children.
- Margaret married James Robertson of Neepawa. They moved to Porcupine,
Saskatchewan and had one son, Weldon.
- James and Mary had four children: Maud, Wellington, Melville
and Roy. They moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta, about 1906.
- John 0. and Maggie had two children, Mary, Mrs. Frank Alleny and
Lindsay.
- Thomas married Margaret Jane Thorn, who died in childbirth. The child, Ethel,
was brought up by James and Mary.
- Robert was a bachelor.
- Sam married Jennie McKay. They had no children.
- Richard married Margaret King. They had two children, William
and Jean. William is a truck driver out of Calgary. Jean married William
Chase. They farm at Brunkild, Manitoba, and have one son, Gary.
JAMES KEATING by M rs. W. A. Keating
James Keating was born at Tistowell near Stratford,
Ontario. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Buchanan in 1880. Their first
child, a girl died at birth. Their next two children, John and George
were born in Ontario and moved with their parents to Manitoba in 1882. John and George
died at the age of 16 and 14 years.
William Andrew Keating was born in 1885 and Mena
Keating and her twin brother Earl in 1889. Earl died in the
summer of 1889. Glenn Keating was born in 1892 and Lillian
Elizabeth in 1894.
James Keating and his wife and family settled in the Stratford District
on 4-20-27. He was well-known for his hospitality and kindness. Jennie,
his wife, helped many of the neighbors in sickness and also when children were born.
William Andrew Keating, the oldest of the remaining children, attended
Stratford School and finally Settled on what is now known as the home farm N. 1,2
16-20-27. He married Annie E. Ebbern, April 10th, 1918. They had five
children The oldest Elgin Lee was born on March 6th, 1919 and he attended Stratford
school. He married Mary Wright of Rounthwaite, in 1944. Their
eldest son, William Arthur was born in 1948 and went to school in
Stratford and later to Russell High School taking Grade 9. His daughter, Judy
Dianne, was born in 1953 and is at present going to Stratford School.
Lyle James Keating was born in 1923. He attended Stratford
school and later went to Russell High School. He farrned the home farms successfully and
bought a Caterpillar tractor in 1950, the start of the Road Construction.
Wilda Jean Keating was born in 1925 and went to
Stratford school later attending Binscarth High School. She took a business course in
Calgary and later married Earl Smith of Red Deer, Alta. They have two
children, Carol and Donald. They live in Red Deer, Alberta.
Donelda Lillian Keating was born Oct. 6, 1929. She
attended Stratford School and later went to Binscarth High School where she finished her
Grade 12. She trained for a teacher at the Normal School in Winnipeg and taught for some
time. she married Richard 0. Crawley, a farmer at Clan William and they
have three children: Linda Patricia, attending Minnedosa High School;
Glen, attending the home school at Lakelet; and the youngest child, Bruce.
Gerald Francis Keating was born in the year 1934. He
attended Stratford school and later Russell High School, where he was awarded the Governor
General's Medal. After completing High School, he took the management of the Road
Construction Business. He married Helen Louise Strabl of Minnedosa in the
year 1958. They have four children: David, attending Stratford School, Lori
Anne, Holly Naomi and Amelia Louise. Gerald
Keating took a pilot's course and bought his own plane in 1965.
Mena Keating married James Broadfoot
in 1909 and they had one son John now residing with his wife in Seattle,
Washington
Glenn Keating married Elizabeth Vinnell
in 1919. They had no children. After Mrs. Glenn Keating's death, Glenn married again and
is now retired in Calgary. Lillian Elizabeth Keating attended Stratford
school and married Charles Morrison in 1916. They moved from a farm here
in Stratford to Chipman, New Brunswick. They had a store and cafe there and after Charles'
death, Mrs. Morrison still operated the store with the help of her eldest son Argyle
and her daughter Mary Morrison. Argyle married a minister's daughter, Katherine
Haydon. Two children were born, a son and daughter, Raymond and Lynne.
Mary Morrison remained single and lives with her
mother at Chipman. The third child, Willard, married a Chipman girl Gery
King. They have no children and live in Minto, New Brunswick.

THE STORY OF THE EATING FAMILIES by Earle Keating
Sarah Keating, widow, and family Known as the "Centre Keatings".
Sarah Keating was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1843. She
came to Canada and settled in Perth County, Ontario with her parents. She married James
Keating in 1863. James died about 1880, from the effect of being mauled by a bear
while working in the bush.
In 1883 Sarah came to Manitoba with her family, and settled in Silver
Creek. She had six boys and two girls, ranging in age from 6 to 19 years. James,
William, George, Jose, Jennie, and Clara all died between the ages of 10 and 22
years. Charlie was married to Jean Chalmers and died in
1903. They had no children. John Edgar was the only one of the family
left.
They first lived in a vacated shanty on 34-20-27. In 1885 Sarah bought
the N.E of 27-20-27 for $640.00. This land remained in the family, where Earle, John E's
oldest son, still lives and operates the farm. Sarah bought this land from the Manitoba
and North Western Railway Company.
John E. Keating married Margaret Anderson
in 1892 and they lived with his Mother, Sarah Keating, who died in 1918 at the age of 75
years. They had six children: Clara, Mrs.Wat
Broadfoot, now in Winnipeg; Earle, still living on and operating
the original farm; Lynn, who died in infancy; Edna, Mrs. Clarence
McLaren, now of Olds, Alta; Wallace at Selkirk, Manitoba; and Gordon
of Neepawa, Manitoba.
Earle bought the farm in 1919, and John E. and Mrs.
Keating moved to Russell, where they lived for one year. Then they built a house in
Silverton, and lived there till Mrs. Keating died in 1931. After she died, Clara
bought the house, and John E. spent his last years with her. He died in 1940 at the age of
74 years. Sarah Keating's home, like many other early Settlers was always open for Church
services, prayer meeting, etc. before a church and school was built.
John E. was a lover of horses, and in the early years owned some prize
winning Clydesdales, when the Russell Agricultural Society was in its infancy. He was also
one of the first farmers in the district to own a tractor for field work.
In the early days he hauled freight from Moosomin for his
father-in-law, Robert Anderson, who operated a little country store on
the banks of Silver Creek one and a half miles east of Silverton. James Kippan
had a blacksmith shop just across the road from the store. This was the centre of the
district for a number of years.

Clara Broadfoot had one daughter Lorna, Mrs. Harold Darragh,
now living in Winnipeg. Children Garry, Lynne, and Olden Darragh.
The Earle Keating Family
Earle married Bessie McLean of Shoal Lake
in 1922. Mr. and Mrs. Earle Keatng have been active in all church and community affairs.
They have served not only locally, but in district and provincial executives of the
Manitoba Federation of Agriculture and Co-operation, in the New Democratic Party, and
church organizations. Earle has been an Elder of the United Church for thirty years. He
has been secretary of the local Pool Elevator since its organization in 1943. They had
four children.
Charlie, a Squadron leader in the RCAF since its
organization in 1943. He spent three and a half years in Germany after World War II. He
married Alice North in 1945. Their children, Neil, Jane, Olwyn,
and Wendy who was born in Germany. Neil and Jane are now attending the University
of Manitoba.
Donald, an ordained minister of the United Church,
B.A.B.D. A Navy Wireless operator in the Air Force 1944-45. He married Gloria
Bower, daughter of Rev. Conrad Bower in 1952. Their children are Joy,
Donna, Paul and Andrew. Donald preached at Sherridan, Oakville and Treherne. He
was Assistant minister of Westminster Church in Winnipeg and is now doing pastoral work in
Chicago's Inner City.
Marion, Mrs. Mac McNabb a graduate of
United College in 1949, was married in 1952. She had been a Social Worker, and Youth
Leader before her marriage. They are presently farming at Basswood. Their children are Elaine,
Charlie, Clark and Jamie.
Jack married Sheila Dickey in 1953.
They live in Winnipeg. Jack is supervisor of broilers with Canada Packers. He is a
graduate of Manitoba Universityb with a degree in Agriculture. They have two children, Theresa
and Dean.
The Clarence McLaren
(Edna Keating) Family
Edna married Clarence McLaren, now at Olds., Alta. They have two
children, Meryle and Kenneth. Meryle, Mrs. Rod Staublef of
Alsask, Saskatchewan, has two boys, Clifford and Marvyn. Ken
is a meteorologist at Toronto. He has two girls.
The Wallace Keating Family
Wallace married Hattie McKarlane in
1922. He farmed at Clandeboye for 30 years, and is now living in Selkirk, Man. They have
three children Arvon, Larry and Margaret.
Arvon, a United Chtlrch minister, married Beth
Salles of Selkirk. Their children are Leslie, Audrey, Argyle and Kent.
He has preached at Dominion City and Nesbitt..
Larry, manager of Piston Ring Automovtive Service in
Winnipeg, married Joan Sample. They have Laurie, Cam, Christie
and Shannon and are presently living in Clandeboye.
Margaret married Wm. Gray, a Corporal in
the R.C.A.F., now in Winnipeg. Their children are Billie, Lee, Cathy, and Lynne,
Joan, and Jack.
Gordon married Florence Reece of Grandview and Swan River. For a time he owned a garage in Boissevain. He is now employed by Manitoba Department of Highways. Their children are Alwyn and Gerald, bother married in 1965. Alwyn is Electrical Engineer D.Sc.E.E. at Lloydminister, and Gerald a Pharmacist at Partage La Prairie.
