Thomas N. Huddlestone was born at Bedford, Iowa, U.S.A., in 1859 of
English parents who had come from Lancashire, England in that year. He moved
to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, in his youth and later to Russell, Manitoba. In
1887 he married Louisa Johnstone of Roblin, Man. He was a gunsmith
and kept a general repair shop in Russell. He died in June of l9l0 at Melville,
Sask. at the home of his daughter Ruby.
Louisa Johnstone was born in 1866 at Billings Bridge, Ottawa, Canada.
She came west with her parents in 1882 settling at Boggy Creek near Roblin. Her
father was sent from Ottawa as Indian farm instructor and was known in that district as
"Old Boggy" Johnston. Mrs. Huddlestone was an elocutionist and no affair
was too big or too small without a recitation or two from her. She also wrote
excellent poetry.
Of this union were born seven daughters. The eldest. Pearl,
married John Noble of Vernon, B.C., later moving to Victoria, B.C.
He was in the wholesale hardware business in that city of this union were three children,
two sons and a daughter. The elder son, Howard, continues his late
father's business and has two daughters Darlene and Bonnie. A second son,
John, who resides in Victoria. is a professor of Chemistry. The daughter Audrey
died early in her youth. Pearl resides in Victoria and is in contact with several of the
old timers from Russell .
Second daughters Opal, was a school teacher and
married R. E. Moore of Wadena, Sask., later going to Cudworth, Sask to
open a hardware store. They had two sons and three daughters, Geo. and
Claude, both pilots killed in the second World War. Loreen moved
to Calgary and married Jack Laird. They had no children. Jean and
Muriel both married and live in Edmonton, and Roy and Opal are
both deceased.
Third daughter, Ruby married P. D. Bellamy
of Melville Sask. A C.N.R. conductor. They had two sons and two daughters. Phil of
Calgary, Alberta, is in the bakery business, is married and has one son. Ruby's second
son, Donavan, was killed in a car accident in 1962. Lucia,
who married Jack Halliday, service Manager of Greenfield Motors of
Balcarres, Sask., and has a son, Dean, and a daughter Carole.
June is married to Ray Rhynbend of Melville, Sask., a railway
engineer. and has one son who is in the Ministry Ruby died in 1961 and is survived by her
husband.
Fourth daughter Maud, married Geo. Abell
of Carroll. Manitoba, a general merchant. They had two daughters, Vivian,
who married Roland Purkis of Winnipeg. They have a son,
Brian and a daughter Elaine. Phyllis married Edgar
Spangelo of Darlingford, Manitoba. They have one daughter, Tannis
Kae. Maud and George are both deceased.
Fifth daughter Lucia, married in 1920 to J. W.
Dudley, retail merchant of Regina, Sask. Mr. Dudley died in March of 1964,
leaving two sons and two daughters. Jim, of Regina, was with the R.C.A.F.
in the Second World War in radar and has been with Saskatchewan Government telephones
since that time. He married Flora McLintock in 1944 and they have a son, John,
and a daughter Jean. Olive married W. H. McArter,
assistant manager of Sales for Canada of Brook Bond, Montreal, Quebec. They have two boys,
Rodney and Gregory. Their second son, Jack, at home, is in the
contact hardware with J. H. Ashdowns of Regina.
Sixth daughter Audrey, married John Griffiths
of Yorkton in 1922. He died in 1956. They had two sons and one daughter. John
of San Francisco, California. died with his wife in a plane crash over Mexico in
1958. Glen, of Regina, is married and has one son and three daughters. Wanda,
who married Howard Hendren of Kelvington, Sask., a flying officer in the
late war and now in business in Regina. They have no children.
The seventh daughter, Vivian, was married in 1929 to
B. C. McDonald of Regina. They continued in the grocery business until he
retired in 1960. They have one son, Tom, at home.
