JOHN HAMMOND by Myrtle Callin (1967)

Mr. and Mrs. John Hammond and their two sons came to Manitoba in the year 1883, from Attwood, Perth County, Ontario. They, like many more, didn't lay claim to riches - as he wittily stated, "I had a wife, two sons and two dollars when I landed."

He purchased S.W. 1/4 4-21-27, erected log buildings, set up a lime kiln and sold lime to anyone who wanted it. They added acres to crop land, and acquired a fine herd of Hereford cattle.

There were five children in the family: two sons, Edward and E:tobert; three daughters, Hattie, Maggie and Jennie the girls passed on early in life The two eldest girls took music lessons. Hattie, violin and Maggie, the organ, and many pleasant musical hours were spent in their home. The family attended Silver Creek School and Silver Creek Presyterian Church.

John Hammond sold his fann to his son Edward and moved to Russell in 1917 and resided there until his death in December 1919. Mrs John Hamrnond (nee Ellen R. Forrest) predeceased her husband in December, 1916.
