THE GOODBUN BROTHERS
The Goodbun brothers, Archibald, Douglas and Oscar
were all characterized by that friendliness of nature which inevitably leads to familiar
nicknames, and all three had them - "Ike", 'Tim" and "Bun". They
brought with them an intense love of English ways which they maintained in the land of
their adoption. Their open hearted generosity and pleasant manners attracted a wide circle
of friends.
Archie Goodbun, the eldest of the three took up a farm
at Dropmore there is a story, not fully authenticated, that a casual remark of his led to
the naming of the district. He and his wife Violet had five sons, Henry, Archie,
Reg. Jack and William, and two daughters, Winona and Nell.
Oscar Goodbun, popularly known as "Stodger"
or "Bun", was veteran of the Boer War and of the First World War. He was a fine
horseman and loved a game of polo which a few settlers from England tried to establish in
their new home. He and his wife Daisy, had a son Oscar and a daughter Ruth.
The boy was tragically killed when his horse stumbled and fell. Ruth, ( Mrs. John
Cunningham ) is now living at Penticton, B.C.
Douglas Abdy Goodbun ("Tim") and his wife
Alice were renowned for the hospitality they extended to all their friends at the
comfortable farm home they had built in the Royston district. Alice came of true pioneer
stock, being the daughter of James Lawther and his wife Agnes (Kinnaird). She was a
wonderful cook and she and Tim were never happier than when they entertained to dinner
their many visitors. Their home was modelled on an English country manor with French
windows opening on to a spacious lawn with a tennis court and beds of flowers. Both Tim
and his wife Alice will long be remembered in Shellmouth and Russell.
