David Dunn's early history is recorded under
"Minniska Pioneers". His daughter Margaret (Mrs. George McLeod) and better known
as Mag, quotes-"After mother died at Emily's birth, leaving nine little ones, he
worked very hard to provide for his family. He bought land at tax sales, improved it and
sold it at a profit. He did this with houses in town too. He was kept busy driving back
and forth to town on business I started keeping house at fifteen. When we girls were all
married, father engaged a house keeper. A girl was often hired to help, too, as there were
many men to feed.' David Dunn was a man of sterling qualities. He faced the hardest tasks
with an "Oh, to Baggery!" or "the Dear knows!" He loved to make a
deal, and strike a hard bargain and yet he showed compassion too, as when once a poor
lady, a tenant of his with a small family could not pay her rent. He was growling about
this to a group of men one day, on the street corner. One suggested he put her out, and he
replied, "O. Jollies, where would the poor woman go?" Many a family in the
thirties had a house almost rent free.
David Dunn kept his family together and they all loved and respected
him. He was never happier, than on those special occasions, a birthday or anniversary
gathering or a family picnic at the lake, each an occasion which was looked forward to by
many, every year. His connection generally meant everyone to the forty-second cousins.
