THE BUTCHER FAMILY by Miss Edith W. G. Mott
Anthony George Butcher with his wife. four boys,
Ralph, Ronald, Fred, Max, and two girls, Winifred and Dora, came
from Plymstock, Devon, England, in 1882, where he had been a schoolmaster, to Russell.
They travelled by boat and train to Winnipeg. From there they
continued on to Russell by ox wagon - a slow and tedious journey.
Mr. Butcher took up a homestead four miles south of Russell.
There the family lived in a tent until the log house was built on Section 14-20-28.
Added to his duties of homesteading Mr. butcher took on teaching.
The first school for the district was held in his own log house.
For some years he kept the Dominion Weather records.
In 1893 Winifred, the elder daughter married
William Angus Mott and joined him on his farm, section 34-21-27, north of the
town of Russell. There three children were born Edith, Mary and Beatrice.
In 1895, Mr. Butcher, now a widower, emigrated with his four sons and
daughter Dora to New Zealand where he engaged in business.
Winifred, now residing in Winnipeg at the age of ninety-five, is the
sole survivor of this pioneer family.
