John Brown Family  - published 1967

    John Brown, his wife and two daughters, Margaret and Jessie, came from Dundee, Scotland in 1880 on the same ship as the Kinnairds and the Lawthers.  his wife Margaret was the eldest daughter of David Kinnaird.  Setting north of Russell, Brown and Kinnaird homesteaded, quarters on the same section (16-21-28).  Each subsequently purchased another quarter of this section.

   In Canada the Browns had three more daughters and two sons.  The family consisted of Margaret (Mrs. Blenner-Hassett); Jessie (Mrs. J.M.F. White); Ethel; Dorothy; Jack and Douglas.  Jack had two sons, Jack and Doug, and a daughter Joan; Douglas had two daughters Alice and Winona.

   John Brown left the farm to establish a General merchant business in Russell.  He was joined by A.G.P. Smellie who afterwards purchased his partner's share in the business when Brown moved to Neepawa, where he carried on a large general store until his death.

Lorraine born in Snow Lake Manitoba May 7th 1960. Willie born in Dundee Scotland May 15th 1956.   Willie & Lorraine Brown married Sept. 12th 1981 in Dundee Scotland.  Willie a Journeyman Electrician, Lorraine a Store Manager emigrated to Canada in April of 1982. We lived in Winnipeg until Feb 1985 when we moved to Rossburn, Manitoba. Alison Brown was born in Brandon on Jan 13th 1988.  We left Rossburn for a short period and moved to Gimli Manitoba in March of 1991.  Andrew Brown was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on May 10th 1991.  We returned to Rossburn in August 1991. We moved to Russell in June 1992 and have lived here since. When we arrived in Russell we bought the Mrs. Glasman's home at 114 Pelly South. and in the fall of 1994 we purchased our present home, just outside of town, from Julie Tennant. Willie was working for the former MacLeods and upon their receivership Willie & Lorraine purchased the Russell Macleods. Willie has been a Lions member for 12 years. Both Lorraine and Willie have also been active Chamber of Commerce members. Lorraine was instrumental in the restart of the 1st Russell Cubs,Scouts & Beavers.in 1998. Alison has been a member of Sparks & Guides over the last 6 years, and Andrew has been in Beavers and Cubs. Lorraine was also President of Russell Lots'o'Tots.
