MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS OF INTEREST
Aug. 1933 - Cost prices were: 3 loaves of bread for 14c; brooms - 25c each; cottage rolls - 16c a lb.; bologna 9c a LB; Toilet tissue - 6 rolls for l9c.
In 1914 - Mrs. Nellie McClung gave an address in Wright's Hall to a large audience. She spoke in favour of Women's Suffrage in Manitoba.
In 1929 - For a short while the North-Western Business College was run by Miss Ulrich. It was set up above Hills store.
In 1936 - A Second-Hand Furniture finest in the Merchant's Bank building was carried on by Truman Lamb for a few years.
In Aug. 1911 - Leon Molfson of Liverpool. England bought the Barnardo Home along with 3,500 acres.
In 1893 - Nicholas Seeback built Richard Clee's house. It is now owned by Dr. C. C. Graham.
In March 1903 - A team of good draft horses were selling from $380 to $550.
Oct. 1928 - Ed. Hammond took over both the Matheson and Clement Dairies and now has the whole Russell milk business.
March 13 1913 - An explosion wrecked the building of the Russell Gas Works and did considerable damage to the plant.
Nov. 1927 - Ed. Wellman has completed his contract through the Mountain. He put in eleven culverts besides doing repair work.
In 1903 - Binder twine sold for 13c to 15c a lb.
In April 1901 - The population of Russell was 426 comprising 85 households and 84 dwellings.
In 1911 - The population of Russell had grown to 582.
July 1941 - Every producer now needs a permit to sell wheat.
July 1941 - No sales of gasoline can be made between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and from 7 p.m. Sat. to 7 a.m Monday.
Dec 1908 - Dr. C. W. Gordon Ralph Connor addressed a meeting in Wright Hall following two weeks special evangelistic meetings.
Aug 8 1938 - Do you remember the hail storm which broke close to 4,000 panes of glass in town?
Mar. 1901 - Residents of the Brightside district are asking for challengers to crokinole games.
Oct. 1925 - In Knox United Church Jac Miner of Ontario showed pictures and spoke about his bird sanctuary and the Canada Goose. He thought Russell had several spots that could be used for this purpose.
