Computer Studies

Computer Literacy COMP-0065 (20 hrs)
Recommended: Knowledge of computer keyboarding
This course is the basis for all other computer courses and is highly recommended for students new to computers. Students are introduced to the personal computer and its applications, including word processing and spreadsheets. $140 + text

Assiniboine Community College is pleased to partner with the Manitoba Women’s Directorate to offer POWER UP. This is an introductory computer course for Manitoba women designed to teach the basics of word processing, Windows, Internet and E-mail. Course consists of 15 hours of training with an instructor in a computer lab. $39

Drawing 1 (12.5 hrs)
This course is designed for students of all ages who have had little or no drawing experience. Basic techniques and fundamental drawing skills will be introduced. Students will develop observational skills through a variety of drawing exercises. Drawing from still life items and a variety of objects with an emphasis on personal originality will be encouraged. FoodSafe 1 COOK-0014 (6 hrs)
This course is a must for owners, managers, supervisors, chefs, cooks and all personnel responsible for purchasing, handling, preparing and serving food. FoodSafe is a nationally recognized seminar covering such topics as safe food handling, personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitizing equipment and utensils. Participants who pass the examination receive a nationally recognized certificate which is valid for five years. $60

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Emergency First Aid HLTH-0030 (8 hrs)
Simple First Aid & CPR techniques taught in an interactive environment, for individuals and employees who want an overview of First Aid & CPR for the workplace or home. This Canadian Red Cross course covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults, CPR and other topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission. Required CPR/AED training level is included in the course. This course meets OHS the minimum standard regulations for Basic First Aid. Comprehensive First Aid & CPR techniques for employees and students who need training for work requirements, or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies in the workplace or home. This Canadian Red Cross course covers a variety of first aid information from basic (such as cardiovascular and breathing emergencies, CPR, prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth topics, such as sudden medical conditions and injuries to the head and spine. Required CPR/AED training level is included in the course. This course meets OHS regulations for Standard First Aid, providing more than the minimum standard for most occupations. Babysitting Course HLTH-0128 (10hrs)
Emergencies sometimes do happen, even to the best babysitters. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course teaches youth how to handle emergencies with confidence by providing the basic first aid skills for such common problems as: choking, sprains and strains, bleeding, poisoning, burns and fire emergencies. Students also learn ideas for having fun with the kids while babysitting, how to cope with common problems like tantrums and crying, how to make the children’s environment safe and enjoyable. It is recommended that students be 11 1/2 prior to start date of course. $40

Comprehensive Health Care Aide
Clustered Learning
This certificate program is designed to educate you for a challenging and rewarding career in the health care profession. The program emphasizes communication and interpersonal skills. Employment opportunities exist in acute and extended care hospitals, mental health settings, personal care homes, private care facilities and within the home care industry. This program has been designed for you to continue your studies at the Practical Nursing level, and credits may be transferred to the Practical Nursing Program.

Clustered learning is a type of distance delivery. Course participants use the distance course manuals. The participants are able to work with other students and a facilitator for scheduled learning together, while still having the freedom to work at their own pace using the distance delivery course materials.

Dietary Aide

Dietary Aide 1 HLTH-0027 (60 hrs)
Must Have: A current and favourable Adult Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check and Provincial Child Abuse Registry Check. Foodsafe 1
This course prepares students to provide safe and nutritious foods for clients in health-care facilities. Students learn principles of special diets, safety, sanitation and general food service operations. They participate in 40 hours of theory and approximately 20 hours of practicum at local facilities. Students require light-coloured cotton clothing during their work practicum at three facilities. This course is beneficial for staff of congregate meal programs – Meals on Wheels, group homes, as well as hospitals and personal care homes. Grade 12 is recommended and may be required by some employers. $325
